Crazy Love – Day 3

“How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, ‘Your God reigns!’” Isaiah 52:7
The day began with a short bus ride to Capitol Hill. In small groups we toured this enormous building under the guidance of incredibly knowledgeable tour guides pouring information into us through headphones. (Our guide, Andrew, had earned a master’s degree in history and admitted to reading a book a week on some aspect of history!) Once again we were amazed by the stunning architecture, paintings, and sculptures throughout the building. A marvelous live history lesson! After the tour the choir posed for a group picture on the steps of the Capitol alongside fellow Hunter Streeter Congressman Spencer Bacchus. We then gathered in a shady spot on the grounds of the Capitol where Congressman Bacchus graciously took time out to talk with our youth and encourage them in their mission efforts. He reminded them that it was not actually Congress that was changing the world but them—the XA choir—for they were about changing hearts for eternity. What a blessing!
After lunch in the Capitol cafeteria, we headed to our various mission sites. One group cleaned windows, floors, and closets in a community center. Three groups hosted a one-day Backyard Bible Club for children who attend after-school programs. Students played tag, gave piggyback rides, and simply loved on these needy children. Some acted out the story of the good Samaritan and taught the children songs (“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” was a big favorite!) Another group deconstructed a fence down and moved it to another location. (Charles Trammell says “best fence crew ever!”) Craig Byrd discovered a new toy (a backhoe!) as his group cleared the grounds of a local community center. Several students and adults blanketed the National Mall area with prayers for the leaders of our country and the decisions that they make. What a beautiful sight to observe these young people serving with such joyful hearts!
Dinner was a delicious Italian meal provided by the Merrick Community Center (one of our mission sites). Yum!
Back at the hotel for an intimate worship service that included the Lord’s supper. Bill Decker and Smokey briefly shared from God’s Word; then we concluded the service with a special prayer time for the nine seniors on the trip. Although everyone was weary, we agreed that this worship time refueled us and refreshed us. God is sooo good like that!
Thanks to all who are praying for us while we are here. Please continue! Your prayers are what equip us to press on! We’re eager to see what else He has in store.
